Poem by Catarina Passaretti Nogueira

Twelve Stars, One Sky

Beneath a wide and endless blue,

Twelve stars shine bright and true.

A golden circle, a shared dream,

A promise strong, a steady beam.

From forests deep to open plains,

From snowy peaks to sunny rains,

Each voice unique, yet all as one,

A bond of peace that won’t be undone.

Once torn by war, now built on trust,

Treaties turned conflict into dust.

An anthem rises, a joyful cry,

For twelve stars under a shared sky.

Where borders fade and bridges grow,

And hearts align, the spirit flows.

Together strong, they sing as one,

In unity, their strength is one.

Though challenges come, the stars hold strong,

A hopeful light that always lasts.

Oh, Europe bright, your stars will shine,

A guide for all through endless time.

Teacher Results

As the result of the STEAM Teacher Training in Florence, Italy,  a cross-curricular STEAM project titled "Design Your Own Interactive Story" was create by Ms. Shazia A. Patel, for year7-9 students for the English Language Syllabus. The aim was to introduce to students coding concepts, encourage computational thinking and problem-solving, and to enhance creativity by allowing students to design their own digital stories using SCRATCH.

Students games and projects developed with the teacher:

Outcome 1: Flappy Bird

Outcome 2: Whack a Mole

Outcome 3: Cat in the Tunnel

Outcome 4: Ball game

Outcome 5: Tree

Another activity developed by Mr. Patel focused on encouraging the development of eco-friendly and sustainable products. These activities integrated STEAM with the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The outcomes are listed below:

  • A charity-based business model aimed at supporting students with special needs (developed by Year 9 Students)
  • The development of a small company/start-up sustainable business proposal that could effectively be supported by the government, including a pitch presentation the simulated the application of government funding, showcasing how their ideas could contribute national economic development and social progress (developed by Year 13 Business Students).
  • The development of a comprehensive marketing presentation that included market research, branding elements, promotional strategies, target audience analysis and ethical messaging. They were encouraged to use digital tools and visual aids to enhance their presentations and reflect real-world marketing practices.

Other ideas were implemented by teachers across different subjects and below is a list of some outcomes:

  • Build a simple water purifier. Objective: teach water filtration and environmental sustainability. Skills: scientific method, systems thinking, problem-solving.
  • Bridge Building Challenge. Objective: Design and test the strongest paper or spaghetti bridge. Skills: geometry, structural engineering teamwork.
  • Weather Station Tracker (science and data analysis). Objective: Record daily weather patterns and analyse trends. Skills: Data collection, graphing, scientific observation.
  • Design a wind-powered car (physics and Engineering). Objectives: Use wind to power small cars made from recycled materials. Skills: Motion, force, energy conversion, design thinking.
  • Hydroponics in the classroom (Biology and Engineering): Objective: grow plants without soil to explore plant biology and sustainability. Skills: Botany, environmental science, experimentation.

The activities have proven to be a highly effective model for integrating STEAM, education, sustainability and global citizenship. They have laid the groundwork for a future-focused curriculum that prepares students to succeed in a world where innovation ans sustainability go hand in hand.
